Greatest Hits

When I was in the sixth grade, my classmates voted “The Reflex” by Duran Duran as our top song. Funny thing? I’d never heard of it. That was how out of sync I was with pop culture back then. But once I gave it a listen, I got hooked—not just on “The Reflex” but on an entire world of Duran Duran classics that ended up shaping some of my formative years.

Here’s the thing about “The Reflex” though—I didn’t understand the lyrics at the time. Like so many of us, I loved it for its catchy beat and danceability. But when you really sit with the words, they’re surprisingly deep. Take a look:

The reflex is a lonely child, he’s waiting in the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover, isn’t that bizarre?
And every little thing the reflex does
Leaves an answer with a question mark

At its core, this song is about impulse, about following your gut. Sometimes, that inner reflex leads to great things. Other times… well, it leads to less-than-ideal consequences. The trick? Making sure your instincts are grounded in something greater—in wisdom. And what’s more powerful than the wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit?

This brings us to our upcoming sermon series, Greatest Hits. For the next three weeks, we’ll revisit the sermons you asked to hear more about. We’re kicking things off by looking at a character from scripture who went with their gut… and faced the fallout when it all went wrong.

I can’t wait to start this series with you. It’s always fun to take a deep-dive into familiar topics and uncover fresh insights. Together, we’ll revisit your favorites and maybe discover some new ones along the way.

This is the perfect opportunity to invite a friend to join you. After all, everyone loves a good “greatest hits” album. See you Sunday!
