Summer Soundtracks

Summers have a soundtrack. Songs that are typically played over and over again in June and July. Songs that remind us of good memories when things were slower and carefree. Or they remind us of that one road trip where we heard it a million times! Whatever the case, music has a way of shaping our summer experiences.

Which one of these greatest hits from a past summer bring back memories for you?:

  • LONELY BOY, Paul Anka 1959
  • TOSSIN’ AND TURNIN’, Bobby Lewis 1961
  •  (I CAN’T GET NO) SATISFACTION, The Rolling Stones 1965
  • BAD, BAD LEROY BROWN, Jim Croce 1973
  • DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART, Elton John & Kiki Dee 1976
  • BAD GIRLS, Donna Summer 1979
  • EYE OF THE TIGER, Survivor 1982
  • PAPA DON’T PREACH, Madonna 1986
  • BABY GOT BACK, Sir Mix-A-Lot 1992
  • WATERFALLS, TLC 1995
  • MACARENA (BAYSIDE BOYS MIX), Los Del Rio 1996
  • CRAZY IN LOVE, Beyonce feat. Jay Z 2003
  • I GOTTA FEELING, The Black Eyed Peas 2009
  • PARTY ROCK ANTHEM, LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock 2011
  • CALL ME MAYBE, Carly Rae Jepsen 2012
  • BLINDING LIGHTS, The Weeknd 2020
  • ABOUT DAMN TIME, Lizzo 2022

Depending on your age, some of these are more familiar than others. One of these in particular still takes me back to a road trip from Georgia to New York where we broke down twice. Music is a powerful reminder of our past.

As Christians, we believe that faith and music go hand in hand. Look at how many times believers in the Bible break out in song. They use it for praise, rejoicing, and lamenting. Many people claim that music can bring them closer to God and create a sense of peace and connection with the Divine.

This Sunday we start a new sermon series called, “Greatest Hits.” We will look at some of sermons from that past year that resonated (pun intended) with you. We will sing some of your favorite songs! And if you’re willing, we will dress casually and wear our favorite concert, music, or church t-shirts.

I can’t wait to see you to take this trip down memory lane and see how it points us to the future.

Until Everyone Hears,

faith, #HolyMischief
