Trust God to Go with Us: A Reflection on Genesis 28:10-22

Have you ever felt that odd mix of excitement and fear when stepping into something new? Maybe it’s starting a new job, moving to a new city, or even just making a big life decision. That feeling of standing at the edge of the unknown can be pretty overwhelming, right?

In Genesis 28:10-22, we find Jacob in such a moment. He’s on the run, leaving his home because of some pretty serious family drama. But here’s where it gets interesting: in the midst of his fear and uncertainty, God shows up in a dream.

The Dream at Bethel

Jacob’s dream is not just any dream; it’s a vivid, divine encounter. He sees a ladder reaching up to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. And then, God speaks. He promises Jacob that He will be with him, protect him, and bring him back to this land. Wow, right?

Fear and Faith

It’s normal to feel fear – Jacob certainly did. But here’s the kicker: how we handle that fear speaks volumes about our faith. Psalm 56:3 says, “Whenever I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.” Think about that. Fear isn’t the problem; it’s what we do with it that matters.

Personal Insight

I remember when I had to make a tough decision that filled me with anxiety. I was stepping into a role that seemed way beyond my capabilities. Fear tried to paralyze me. But then, I remembered God’s promise to Jacob and Psalm 56:3. I decided to trust God and take that step of faith. And you know what? God was with me every step of the way, just like He promised Jacob.

A Witness to Our Faith

Our Trinity UMC congregation knows well that life is full of these watershed moments. We face opportunities to either retreat in fear or advance in faith. Each time we choose trust, we witness to our faith—not just to ourselves, but to everyone around us.

Action Step

So, what’s your Bethel? Where is God asking you to trust Him today? Take a moment to reflect. Is there a step you need to take, knowing that God is with you, just like He was with Jacob?

Conclusion

God’s promises to Jacob are as relevant today as they were back then. He’s with us, He’ll protect us, and He’ll guide us home. Whenever you’re standing on the brink of something new and fear tries to creep in, remember Jacob’s dream. Trust that God is right there with you, ready to lead the way.

Let’s step out in faith together, Trinity UMC. God’s got this, and He’s got us.

Until Everyone Hears,

faith, #HolyMischief
